Pompano move about in shoals and can be found in fairly clean water. As they are bottom feeders, they feed naturally on mussels, ghost crab, sealice and sand prawn. You should pursue them where their natural food is, namely on or near a sandbank, rocky outcrop or ledge. Look for them in close promixity to the shore in shallow water where they can often be seen
The best time is on the incoming or full tide during the day, which is when they feed more actively. They will take fresh mussel of the area, sealice, ghost crab, pink prawn combined with skinned squid sheath wrapping or sardine fillet
Typical Bite
The Pompano will either pick up the bait and move off strongly, or it will be detected by slight movement on your line before pulling hard. It swallows the bait while it moves off
