KingFisher Saltwater Sport Karanteen Trace

Although this fish is pursued primarily as a bait fish, if one is lucky enough to catch a large one it makes a good meal. Many of our larger species of predatory fish feed on the abundant Karanteen and will take Karanteen presented as a live bait or fillet when fresh. The Karanteen can be caught very close to the shore, just behind the first wave and often near rocky areas. It can frequently be seen feeding near the rocks with the incoming tide

Early morning and late afternoons are generally the best times. It prefers coooler water, however it is sensitive to sudden temperature change

The primary diet of this fish is seaweed, but will readily take redbait, mussel, prawn and sardine fillet or intestines

Typical Bite

The bite is simply a series of sharp tugs, where you will need to lift the rod to secure the hook

Pro Tips

• Use a pear shaped sinker, as light as possible, secured to the bottom of the trace
• Use light tackle
• Use a minimal amount of cotton if any to secure the bait on the hook
• Always sharpen your hooks and ensure that the point of the hook is exposed when baited
